Judge Story’s Theatrical Troupe is holding auditions for their December 3, 4, 5 children’s theatre
production of Roald Dahl’s WILLY WONKA. The try-outs will be held Sunday, September 19
from 1:00-4:30 in the vocal music room at the Roland-Story Elementary School.

Roald Dahl’s WILLY WONKA T.Y.A. is a musical version of his classic Charlie and the
Chocolate Factory book. A large cast of both kids (up to 40 roles) and adults (10-14 roles) is
required to tell this delightful story. Children must be at least 6 years old by September 1st to
participate in this production. Rehearsals will be held at the elementary building during the
months of October and November – usually in the early evening on weekdays (no Wednesdays
and usually just once or twice a week in the beginning) and on a few Sunday afternoons.
Parents of children participating will be required to assist with supervision for a few rehearsals
and at least one of the three performances.

JSTT membership ($5 single or $10 family) is required for participation in any Troupe
production. There may also be some expense for costuming.

Auditioning younger children will be required to recite the “Pledge of Allegiance” and to sing
the “Alphabet Song” by themselves. Adults and older kids will be asked to read from a script
and to sing a portion of “God Bless America” or “The Star Spangled Banner.”

Cathy Hermanson will be directing Roald Dahl’s WILLY WONKA for the Troupe. Please contact
her (515-419-1171 or cathy@50248.net for further information.

Judge Story’s Theatrical Troupe is pleased to present Cole Porter’s Kiss Me Kate in conjunction with Story City’s 2010 Scandinavian Days festival. The show will be presented at 7:00 pm Wednesday, June 2 through Saturday, June 5 and a matinee performance on Sunday, June 6 at 1:30 pm at the historic Story Theatre/Grand Opera House. Tickets for the production are $10 and available at Norsemen Realty, 601 Broad Street, Story City, (515)733-2922. All seats reserved – MasterCard and Visa accepted.

Kiss Me Kate boasts a unique show within a show format as modern (1948 era) performers play actors appearing in a stage production of William Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. The divorced lead characters (Lilli and Fred) still harbor bitter feelings about the failure of their marriage thereby setting up a mirror of the acrimonious couple they portray on stage. The two battle it out both onstage and off giving vent to frustrations as the lines between art and real life are blurred.

Meanwhile, the two secondary leads (Lois and Bill) are also a struggling couple offstage. Lois enjoys the romantic attentions of lots of men and Bill is addicted to gambling. Bill’s created a problem for himself as he has an outstanding I.O.U. on which he signed Fred’s name. Two enforcers arrive backstage to collect the debt, targeting Fred who knows nothing about the I.O.U., but realizes he can use the two gangsters to help ensure that Lilli (in a fit of jealous anger) doesn’t walk off the stage mid-performance.

The charming gangsters turn out to be big Lilli fans and enthusiastic theatre buffs. Fred persuades them to don Shakespearean costumes so they can keep a closer eye on Lilli to make sure the show goes on. The mayhem both onstage and off takes a wild turn when General Harrison Howell (Lilli’s new fiancé) arrives to take her away not only from the current production, but from her life as an actress.

Several new-to-the-Troupe faces join some of the more regular JSTT performers to stage this delightful show-within-a-show version of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew.

Present: Olive, Hampton, Nations, C.Hermanson, W.Hermanson. D. Ellis
We met at 5:00pm at VF mall

Secretary’s report- Feb. minutes read by Olive- only corrections were
spelling of names, it’s Cathy with a C and Marian with two A’s!

Treasurers report - Approved.- Kester sent reports in his absence.

it was moved by Cathy and seconded by Rhonda to give the After-prom
and Scandi day same amount as last year. MC

Old Business-

Discussed lease has not yet been signed, awaiting word from corporate.

Report form Danny re: Notes from the Underground. Attendance was not
great, but was a good experience & good start to the tour. LeRoy will
figure the $$ and send check to John Ellis next week.

The wheeled racks have been delivered to the Mall, but not put together

The book for ordering hooks for wall has been left at the mall for
Veronica to choose and or check with the Mall People to see if they
have the existing ones in storage.

New Business-

Cathy H. reported on Kiss Me Kate! Auditions are done and the
read-thru went well except for the 2 cast members without an excused
absence! Backdrop is almost completed and Cathy will be sending our
weekly updates for cast and board. There will NOT be a “meet the cast”
for this show and they will move into the theater on May16th. Viking
Hall is reserved and we are again renting the sound mixer board from
Derek Navratil. It was discussed that he thinks we should buy our own
but the troupe feeling is that it’s not going to happen any time soon.
It is quite an expense and would currently be used only once a year.

The Judge is getting the scholarship applications out to Gilbert,
South Hamilton and Roland-Story. The new scholarship committee will be
Amanda Nations, Danny Ellis and Paul Wierson ( this is what happens
when you don’t attend, Paul)

It was brought up that we really need to “push” for a Children’s
theatre next fall. Danny offered to direct the orchestra if a show and
director/directors is found. Options were discussed and we hope to
encourage parents of kids of past shows.

Danny presented a proposal for he and Veronica for the Scandinavian
Days musical 2011. “Little Women, the Musical” is a newer show with a
small cast and great music. Danny brought one song “ Astonishing” to
the troupe to hear. Being no quorum present it was moved by Cathy and
seconded by Amanda to request votes per email. It is assumed this
will pass and become our next big musical. This is offered through
MTI.

Meeting adjourned and next meeting will be April 11, 2010. Same time /
same place

Respectfully submitted by Marian Olive, Temp. Sec’t pro tem.

Judge Story’s Theatrical Troupe will hold auditions for their 2009 Scandinavian Days musical production of SEUSSICAL. Veronica Skaar and Danny Ellis, directors for the late spring production have set auditions for Saturday, March 7 from 10 am-NOON and 1-5 pm and also on Sunday, March 8 from 1-5 pm. The try-outs will be held at the Roland-Story Elementary School, 900 Hillcrest Drive, Story City.

SEUSSICAL is based on the works of Dr. Seuss and the book for the show was written by Lynn Ahrens & Stephen Flaherty. Flaherty also wrote the music for the show with Ahrens contributing the lyrics. The idea for SEUSSICAL was co-conceived by Eric Idle.

A fantastical journey through a young child’s imagination leads the Cat in the Hat and the child to the Jungle of Nool and Horton the elephant who is very concerned about the world of the Whos. A world that is wholly lived on a speck of dust that Horton carefully preserves on a stem of clover. In a mischievous act, the Cat interjects the child into the world of Who as JoJo the son of Mr. & Mrs. Mayor of Whoville.

While Horton is busy with JoJo and the Whos we meet Gertrude McFuzz, a bird with a one-feather tail who is in love with Horton. Gertrude has written hundreds of love songs to Horton and despairs of ever being noticed by him. She is convinced the problem lies with her one feather tail. Just when Gertrude is about to give up, the Amazing Mayzie, a far more flamboyant bird, leads her to a doctor who prescribes a pill to help get Gertrude’s tail feathers growing. Of course a full feathered tail for Gertrude leads to unanticipated problems that must be overcome.

Meanwhile, some naughty monkeys (The Wickershams) and some of their cohorts snatch Horton’s clover and the Whos and fling it into a whole field of clover. How will Horton ever find Whoville and his friends again? Horton’s problems are just beginning though as he is enlisted to babysit Mayzie’s egg while she takes a break. While Mayzie is gone, a group of hunters capture Horton and sell him to the Circus McGurkus. In a series of special and dramatic adventures, through Horton, JoJo, Mayzie and Gertrude we are introduced to creatures from several Seuss stories. Ultimately, everyone learns important lessons about faith and hard work. Horton and his friends teach us to persevere even (perhaps especially) when times are tough.

Performance dates for SEUSSICAL are Wednesday June 3 through Saturday, June 6 at 7:00 pm and a Sunday Matinee, June 7 at 1:30 pm at the Story Theatre/Grand Opera House. Questions about auditions may be directed to Veronica Skaar at wickedpopular@gmail.com.
