Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods is the musical Judge Story’s Theatrical Troupe has selected to perform for Scandinavian Days 2006. Auditions will be held Saturday, March 4th from 9-noon and 1:30-4:30, Sunday, March 5th from 1:30-4:30 with call backs later on Sunday evening, March 5th from 6-8. They will take place at Grand Viking Hall, which is the second floor of Story City’s City Hall located at 504 Broad Street. The production calls for 25 adults.

Into the Woods is an audience-friendly production with a simple premise. A group of familiar fairy tale characters travel into the woods - each in search of his heart’s desire. Along the journey they will learn many things - some scary, some grand. Some of them will grow through the experience while others will be destroyed by it. Among those wandering about the woods are a Baker and his wife who have been charged by an evil witch to collect key items of interest from each of the fairy tale characters. If they are successful, the witch’s curse will be lifted and the two will no longer be childless. In their quest, the Baker and his wife encounter Jack (of Beanstalk fame), Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and their respective Princes. By the end of the first act all of the characters have realized their dreams and are poised to “live happily ever after”. Unfortunately, in Act 2, each fairy tale character learns there are serious consequences for the choices he/she made while on the path toward gaining his heart’s desire. This is when “happily ever after” meets the problems of the real world and each character must try to make amends while accepting responsibility for previous actions - with some of them finding more success at this than others.

Into the Woods is packed with unforgettable roles combined into a powerful ensemble production. The score is ripe with beautiful music that helps tell the story with a rich blend of humor and tenderness.

Informational packets about the auditions are available at Norsemen Insurance & Realty in Story City. Performance dates for the show are May 31, June 1-4, 2006. If you have questions about the show or the auditions please contact the production director, Veronica Skaar.
